The Tate Year 3 Project

Transforming the traditional class photo into one of the most ambitious art projects London has ever seen.

A New Direction have been a favourite and long standing Thirdperson client and we were thrilled when they came to us to help establish a project aimed to engage 115,000 children and 2,410 schools across London.

Our role was to create a visual flavour for the project teaching resource materials to help teachers embed the project in schools.

The Tate Year 3  project is the brainchild of Oscar-winning film-maker and artist Steve McQueen. His vision is to use the concept of the traditional school photograph to celebrate the diversity of the city in which he grew up.

The project is a partnership between McQueen, Tate Britain, ArtAngel, and A New Direction. Artangel will stage the results in unexpected places and will create an outdoor exhibition of class photographs in each of London’s 33 boroughs. The resulting images will also be displayed in Tate Britain’s Duveen galleries between November 2019 and May 2020.
